The Gardens

Hembury Mill is situated in a secluded and peaceful setting, within a sheltered valley on the Eastern outskirts of Askerwell, close to Eggardon Hill, we have a large child friendly garden for our guests to use and relax in.

At the lower end, near to the ciderbarn and mill is a small orchard of apples trees, conveniently located for pressing  cider in the cider barn, you will often find our friendly chickens hanging around and eating the apples!

Farther up the garden is the Mill pond where the power for the waterwheel comes from. Here we provide an outdoor seating area and a barbeque area, a perfect place to relax and enjoy the surrounding views of the Dorset countryside.

The Millpond , which is fed by a natural spring, is stocked with a number of species of fish, including trout and is connected to the Leat via a sluice gate. The Leat  which is key to running the Mill, in that it provides a channel of water to the Waterwheel. Once the sluice gates are closed near the Mill end and we open the upper gates, the Leat begins to fill with water. When it is deep enough, a gate can be opened by the water wheel and the wheel begins to turn.
